what’s rad about machines, and i’m going to go all on the duchamp/bergson tip, is how modern man is able to abstract his functions into these repetitive motions that are perfect… in terms of their speed and strength and rationalism. at the same time, any time a machine deviates from its one particular function all goes awry, it goes from being perfect to a clumsy, limbless child. you could totally do just the most amazing aesthetics of failure type thing with machine imagery. while lange isn’t doing that overtly, i love how he underscores the almost needless complication of machinery… there’s this hilarious “desperate, overly made-up spinster in a hotel” vibe to these on some level. or i’m crazy.
