TRAPPN#111: Thorsten Brinkmann

Berta von Schwarzflug, 2010

“In the mercantile port of Hamburg, Thorsten Brinkmann tangles with a modern-day caveman’s dreams. Unable to resist the allure of dumped urban detritus, this German artist recomposes and intervenes in the trash to scrap cycle to come up with installations, videos or photos such as portraits and still lifes. Why wouldn’t you wrap your head in sheet metal?”

TRAPPN#98: Mount Merapi eruptions

Images of the eruption at Mt. Merapi in Indonesia, from Boston.com’s Big Picture Blog. The volcano has been erupting since October 25, 2010, and 140 people have died.

My failure to post photos of the actual victims is purposeful -this is a hard time for many in Indonesia, and I don’t mean to ignore that. It’s just that I find it so much more intriguing to consider this volcano in its sublime form. Beautiful and terrifying. The more these world disasters happen, the more I feel like the 2012 hypothesis is correct. Oh well, I’m just gonna move to Fogo Island and finish my life off worry free.

TRAPPN#86: Hanging Coffins

Hanging coffins in Sagada, Phillipines

Hanging graves in Torajaland, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Hanging graves and spiritual effigies at Londa Nanggala at Torajaland, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Would love to go see any of these! I’ll also make a pit stop at Aokigahara Forest beneath Japan’s esteemed Mt. Fuji, one of the most noteworthy places in the world for suicides. It’ll be like, a macabre trip, and shit. I’ll be sure to wear my skeleton leggings.

TRAPPN#82: Jil Sander SS 2011

Jil Sander, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated french houses, and has been one of my great loves forever. This collection seems to make fun of fashion’s current trends, stretching them to a point of exaggeration, yet past the point of amusement and into the realm of conceptualism. Still, although I think this collection has more artistic merit than wearability, I would [attempt to] wear every piece [if I could afford them].

TRAPPN#67: The Ferrari Pinin

(Source: Ultimatecarpage.com)

FERRARI PININ, released 1980 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company and named after Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, italian automobile designer (especially for Ferrari). The Pinin is notable for being the first Ferrari with four doors.

I don’t have my driver’s license and I generally hate cars, but there’s something so otherwordly and sexual about Ferraris from the 70s and 80s, especially the Pinin. Cars are one of my favourite things to look at as far as aesthetic history goes, because first of all, the trends are so visible (we take note of design because they’re everywhere) and second of all, because they wear out. This car seems kind of fugly now, but at one point it was considered a prized luxury item. Weird, right? I think if I could get my hands on a really rusty Pinin, that would be my dream car.
